The ever-changing face of the "River of Grass" flows 60 miles wide to over 100 miles long, from Lake Okeechobee to the Florida Bay. In the south-western Everglades there are evening roosting sites within the mangrove marshes where thousands of wading bird congregate. At sunrise they dramtically fly off in unison to their favorite shallow pools teeming with fish. At the end of the day, they return to the safety of their roosting colony. As the drought season approaches the receding marshland pools of water force large concentrations of fish to gather causing competitive feeding frenzies among many species of birds and alligators.
